Naked Foraging Day
Foraging naked is a liberating experience that allows you to truly immerse yourself in nature. Join us for a day of wild food foraging at one of three beautiful ancient woodlands. Col and Sadie are running a forage in Lancashire, Beth and Neil leading another in Somerset, and Siobhan, Chris, and Helen will host a special event in their private woodland in Nidderdale. Each of them offer an opportunity to discover nature’s bounty. Together, we’ll learn about foraging edible plants and fungi, revel in the freedom of nature, and make unforgettable memories. Come prepared for an exhilarating day that celebrates the joys of the natural world!
24th August

Forage Au Natural
Foraging is about connecting with nature and understanding the natural world around us. A forage walk is about mindfulness and wellbeing. Plants, mushrooms, nuts, fruits, berries - learning about foraging is a life skill that enhances every walk you have. Beware though, once that roving mushroom and wild food spotting eye is turned on, it is impossible to turn it off again. This is a very addictive hobby!

Why Naked?
Studies show that naturism is good for you and for mental health. Getting rid of your clothes is good for your body image. Foraging is about understanding our natural environment and reconnecting with your ancestors, and what better way than to do it au-naturel.
Join us on an organised forage to celebrate this day of freedom and nature connections.

Lancashire with Colin & Sadie

Colin and Sadie are passionate advocates for nature and wild food foraging. Colin, AKA Forest Horizons on social media, runs courses focused on foraging and embodiment. Both Colin & Sadie are members of the Association of Foragers and bring a unique aspect to the foraging community with their naked forages.
In 2022 they embarked on an adventure like no other, cycling naked from John O'Groats to Land's End alongside Naked Neil and classical musician Hannah. The aim was to raise awareness and funds for Rewilding Britain and Mind. Their commitment to both nature and community inspires others to connect with the environment in meaningful ways.
You may recognise Col & Sadie, Col has appeared on various TV programmes including Gardeners World to talk about mushrooms, Jeremy Vine to talk about naturism, and they both appeared on This Morning to talk about their epic bike ride.

Somerset with Beth and Neil
Beth is a dedicated forager (pictured in the middle) with a deep passion for connecting people to nature. Her enthusiasm for the great outdoors shines through in her teachings on edible mushroom species, where she shares her knowledge with others. Engaging with community projects and forest schools, Beth fosters a love for the environment among participants of all ages. She also runs her own courses, creating opportunities for individuals to learn hands-on skills essential for foraging and understanding the natural world. Through her work, Beth inspires others to appreciate and respect the bounty of nature, highlighting the importance of sustainable practices in foraging and the enjoyment of outdoor experiences. She will be accompanied by Neil who is a member of British Naturism, a lover of the outdoors and passionate about foraging and naturism.

Foraging can be a delightful and rewarding experience, and there's no need to rely solely on organized events. Gather a few friends who share your enthusiasm for nature and embark on your own foraging adventure! To enhance your foraging knowledge, consider joining Facebook groups like Mushroom Spotters UK where you can find assistance in identifying your finds, and always wise to cross-reference with your own guidebooks to ensure accuracy and safety. Additionally, if your foraging takes you onto private land, remember to obtain permission from the landowner to respect their property and adhere to legalities and have a read of our section below outlining the law around nudity. Happy foraging!

Frequently asked questions
Do I have to be naked?
Naked Foraging Day events are body positive and have a focus on acceptance, whatever your attire. All that we ask is that you are positive about body freedom.
What level of foraging experience is needed?
Understanding nature is fascinating whatever your level of knowledge or expertise. Whether you are a complete beginner and curious about foraging or come from a long line of foragers with knowledge passed down through the generations, you are welcome to join us.
Is the event open to first-timers?
Absolutely! We welcome newcomers. Our friendly forage leaders will help you feel comfortable and informed.
What kind of activities are planned?
A forage is a walk in the woods, stopping to learn about different species of mushrooms and plants that we find. Within the forage is a short workshop about embodiment in foraging, where you will reflect on the 'what' and 'when' of nature connections.
Are cameras and phones allowed?
Photo's will be discussed at the start of each forage and anyone's wishes will be respected. Group members will be asked not to take photos during the forage, and photos of consenting participants will be taken by our designated photographer and shared to attendees after the event. No photos will appear online without prior consent.
Two of the forages are to be held in public woodlands. We have chosen the venue and route so that we are not in highly populated areas. It is inevitable that we will encounter members of the public and a few raised eyebrows, but we don't expect any issues.
What should I bring?
Depending on the weather on the day you might want a warm layer. Other than that, bring a cover up (most naturists carry a sarong or piece of fabric that doubles as something to sit on), a basket if you have one, a foragers staff if you have one, and a friendly smile.
Is it ok to wear shoes?
Absolutely! Our forage leaders will be wearing shoes or boots. The forest floor can be sharp and thorny. Some people have a preference for barefoot but we don't advise this in a group activity like foraging unless your feet are already hardened and used to it.
What if I feel uncomfortable or have a problem during the event?
Our event staff will help. You can approach any team member for support or assistance at any time.
Will there be food and drink available?
No, we ask that you bring a sandwich or other snack. We will stop for lunch during the forage.
Are there any toilets?
At Bank Woods (Siobhan's forage), yes. Col & Sadie's forage and Beth & Neil's forage, no. Most foragers can find a spot out of sight...
How is personal privacy and safety ensured?
We prioritize a respectful and safe environment. Any inappropriate behavior is not tolerated and will be challenged and managed.
How do I manage feminine hygiene at a naturist event?
Your comfort and health are important. You’re welcome to use whatever products you normally do — such as tampons, menstrual cups, or period underwear. If you're more comfortable wearing pants or a sarong or light cover-up during your period, that's completely fine. It is normal at naturist venues and events for women to wear something during her time of month. Sadie, Beth or Siobhan are happy to discuss this if you have any questions. Please don’t hesitate to speak to a staff member if you have any concerns — we’re here to support everyone.
Nudity & The Law
One of the questions naked foragers get asked is, is it legal? The answer is, yes it is.
In the UK, being naked in public places is perfectly legal as long as the conduct and behaviour of the individual falls under the category of 'passive public nudity'. Examples of passive nudity are walking or cycling through the countryside. Foraging naked is passive nudity. We do advise that you wear a friendly smile :D
To provide further clarity and guidance on the topic, British Naturism has published specific guidelines on their website, helping individuals understand the boundaries of acceptable public nudity. It is important for practitioners and enthusiasts alike to be aware of these distinctions to safely enjoy their lifestyle.
It is a good idea to print out the info in from the British Naturism website to have that in your foraging basket in case of any interactions with a police officer who is unaware of the law.
